Nicola Varns grew up in Sheffield and Norfolk, and read Modern Languages at St. Anne’s College, Oxford.
After completing her Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of York, she moved to London to teach German and French at a multicultural girls’ school.
Since 1998 Nicola has been a freelance corporate trainer and translator for business English in Berlin. Her years of teaching experience in the construction industry as well as the German Bundestag have led to her specialisation in the fields of ground engineering, housing, real estate, politics and legislation, the environment, management, human resources, marketing and financial services.
Since 2016 Frau Varns has also been a German citizen. Her dual nationality reflects the fact that she is at home in both languages and cultures and can switch effortlessly between the two. Being ‘bicultural’, she understands the challenges that can arise when switching between different business cultures, such as formality versus informality, the perception of hierarchy and the role of socializing as well as non-verbal communication.
